Is There Still A Place For Mudcloth?

Mali-Mud-Cloth-1.jpg

Bogolan means ‘made from mud’ in Bambara, the main language of Mali, hence the traditional term “Bogolan” or “Bogolanfini” is used as the name for this fabric and the process used in making it. There is nothing unsavoury about the mud cloth. The Bogolan technique of dyeing and printing cotton is entirely organic and kind to the environment. It contains no harmful mordants or chemicals and it uses dried leaves and tree bark as dye stuff. Modern dying and fabric making factories cannot boast of the same. This process is traditionally done on the banks of the River Niger or its tributary, the Bani, where the fabric is spread out to dry in the sun.

Laundering these textiles is not recommended. Even dry cleaning not surprisingly, is too much for some of antique textiles. For some of the newer ones, a very gentle hand wash in cool water with a very gentle detergent could works, but even then, the dyes may not be colourfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Vintage. Simplified, comfortable chair radiating ethnic vibes. This chair is fauteuil interpretation by a high-end American furniture design house, an interpretation of a late-Neoclassical French round back chair. It was made especially comfortable for today’s bodies. They wanted to make a stylish chair with “less fuss and more clarity”; consequently they made a fully hand-carved French accent chair with elegance and sophistication.

Tribal Traces has taken this chair to a whole new level by re-upholstering it with a unique 100% cotton vintage mudcloth/Bogolan textile from Mali. This has transformed this chair to a décor “pièce de resistance” with undeniable presence for your home. The traditional technique used to make this vintage fabric, makes it unsuitable for heavy traffic. And so, we recommend when using it daily, that this chair should be cherished mainly as décor piece in the bedroom, office, entrance hall, or just about anywhere you want to titivate.
