Louis XVI Style Armchair

CHF 1,100.00

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Vintage. Simplified, comfortable chair radiating ethnic vibes. This chair is fauteuil interpretation by a high-end American furniture design house, an interpretation of a late-Neoclassical French round back chair. It was made especially comfortable for today’s bodies. They wanted to make a stylish chair with “less fuss and more clarity”; consequently they made a fully hand-carved French accent chair with elegance and sophistication.

Tribal Traces has taken this chair to a whole new level by re-upholstering it with a unique 100% cotton vintage mudcloth/Bogolan textile from Mali. This has transformed this chair to a décor “pièce de resistance” with undeniable presence for your home. The traditional technique used to make this vintage fabric, makes it unsuitable for heavy traffic. And so, we recommend when using it daily, that this chair should be cherished mainly as décor piece in the bedroom, office, entrance hall, or just about anywhere you want to titivate.

BACKSTORY:
When antique furniture is referred to as a fauteuil (literally translates to "armchair" in French) style chair, it specifically means an upholstered armchair with open sides like the one on offer here.

Introduced in the late 1600s in France, towards the end of Louis XIV's reign, it remained somewhat popular in the 18th century. This style became lighter and more graceful in appearance with time and also became more elaborate, with the chair arms upholstered to match the back and seat, again as in this case. The furniture foot style is rather plain and consists of a tapered cylinder that is usually separated from the leg by a turned ring.

The upholstery fabric is the bogolan or Bògòlanfini, more commonly known as “mud cloth”. It is a handmade traditional cotton fabric from Burkina Faso and Mali. It is invariably dyed using fermented mud, berries and leaves. A symbol of cultural identity, it has traditionally had an important place in these countries. Handpicked cotton is spun and woven on narrow looms by the men folk; these strips of approximately 15 cm wide are then stitched together into cloths. The women carry out the more convoluted and cumbersome job of dying the cloths.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
As an eye-catching decorative antique armchair, this channel-tufted armchair is both glamorous and comfortable. Crafted and beautifully sculpted from solid beech wood, this chair has recently been painstakingly restored, refurbished and reupholstered with a beautiful vibrant luscious green 100% cotton fabric called, “Lacefield Villa Cayman Concord”. The contrasting black background evokes a dreamy aura of nightfall in the jungle with just enough light to leave the leaves with a lustrous, glowing fluorescence.

An example of a bergère, (an enclosed upholstered French fauteuil, with an upholstered back, padded elbow rests on the armrests, on an upholstered frame), the seat frame is over-upholstered, but the rest of the wooden framing is exposed, carved, and of beech, with a waxed finish. The wood has been restored with a professional French hand polish. Typical of a bergère, it is fitted with a generous, loose, but tailored, seat cushion, designed for lolling in comfort, with a deeper, wider seat than a regular fauteuil.

Brought back to its former glory in beautiful tropical style, here is an accent chair well-suited for a conservatory, a bedroom, a study, a hallway or a sitting room, this piece will not fail to impose its presence.

Walnut or oak was traditionally used for the body of pieces; walnut and rosewood for surface veneers. The fact that this specific piece is most likely beech wood, leads us to deduce that it does not date back to the 18th century (1700 – 1730) but rather it is a 20th century (1900 - 1950s) replica. The proud former owner had informed me that it had been in their family for 3 generations, has travelled from Switzerland to Canada and then back again to mainland Europe, to the Alsace, France.

from CHF 360.00

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The eye-catching Bamileke feather headdress, has been hand-crafted by the Bamileke people in Cameroon for generations, using the feathers of chickens and sometimes wild guinea fowl, the former which have been coloured using natural organic dyes. Each feather quill is carefully wrapped in a black fabric and sewn onto a basket-like base made of raffia. This makes it easy to fold closed and open.

The Bamileke headdress/hat has been embraced by western interior design. It is the used as a wall decor accessory and table decoration, opening like a blossoming flower.

Each hat is individually crafted, hand woven from natural raffia fibres, making each one unique and different. As a result, variation in colour and size are not uncommon.

It is recommended not to cut any strings as this is part and parcel of the headdress, helping to keep it closed.
