BACKSTORY:

Wood sculpture is the classical tribal art of Africa. The western side of Africa is chiefly responsible for making the African famous as a sculptor in wood. Historically most African sculpture was in wood but also other organic materials, like clay and stone and had purpose and meaning. The earliest wooden sculptures go back only a few centuries, as most did not survive the rigours of the time. Masks/headrests, human and animal figurines are the best-known forms and are often highly stylized. Their lack of concern for naturalistic depiction was the main factor in the attraction, and then the influence of African art on European Modernist art, and from which the latter drew inspiration. African artefacts were or are often made for traditional African religious ceremonies but today many are made for tourists as "airport art". It must be said that traditionally, albeit rarely, there are some tribes that produced what could be termed, "art for art's sake". The people of the Atutu of the Ivory Coast were known to have always made a number of carved objects, which had no practical use and no religious significance.

Including woodcarvings, cubism and tribal art, it is safe to say that African art has played a major role in shaping the culture and history of the world.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Beautifully and skillfully hand-carved African furniture, this exquisite example of functional art, this black Bamileke stool is more specifically referred to as Spider stool due to the traditional feature of the “spider’s nest” design. It has entered into the international design consciousness due to its versatility, lending itself for use as a side table, stool or coffee table and its detailed and intricate work of the carvers in Cameroon.

It has been entirely carved from a single block of kola wood, an African hardwood from Cameroon and then ebonized using a customary traditional method.

Celebrated for its unique architectural and functional design, this well-known earth spider design stool is very adaptable indeed.
