BACKSTORY:
Also called simply Deco, Art Deco is short for “Arts Décoratifs”. Concerned with decorative arts and architecture and originating in Paris in the 1920s, it was the French response to the threat of the German Biedermeier style that was growing in popularity – simple and clean-lined. A collection of several different styles, Art Deco was sometimes contradictory, albeit with aspirations of being modern. It encompassed bold geometric forms of Cubism; bright colours of Fauvism; craftsmanship of Louis Philippe I and Louis XVI period furniture; exotic styles of Asia, ancient Egypt and Mayan art.

It developed into a major style in Western Europe and the United States during the 1930s. Its intention was to create a sleek and anti-traditional elegance that symbolized wealth and sophistication. With great simplicity, the Art Deco era produced armchairs, like this one here, with clean, flexible lines, in contrast to the Art Nouveau style of the 1910s. One of the first truly international styles, Art Deco’s dominance ended with the beginning of World War II giving way to the more strictly functional and unadorned styles of modernism and the International Style of architecture.

Two sets of 6.3 cm/63 mm brass latches allow the back of the sofa to be removed if so desired – adding another dimension, converting it into a chaise lounge. The sofa stands on its original scroll legs. It is very heavy to lift which is always a sign of authenticity and quality!

Bamileke Hat (Juju Hat):
from CHF 360.00

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The eye-catching Bamileke feather headdress, has been hand-crafted by the Bamileke people in Cameroon for generations, using the feathers of chickens and sometimes wild guinea fowl, the former which have been coloured using natural organic dyes. Each feather quill is carefully wrapped in a black fabric and sewn onto a basket-like base made of raffia. This makes it easy to fold closed and open.

The Bamileke headdress/hat has been embraced by western interior design. It is the used as a wall decor accessory and table decoration, opening like a blossoming flower.

Each hat is individually crafted, hand woven from natural raffia fibres, making each one unique and different. As a result, variation in colour and size are not uncommon.

It is recommended not to cut any strings as this is part and parcel of the headdress, helping to keep it closed.
